Fried Bologna Sandwich with Onions

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 4 Slices Bologna thick-cut if possible
  • 1 Medium Onion
  • 2 Tbs Butter
  • 4 Slices Bread – Wheat or White
  • 4 Slices Cheddar/Colby Jack or American Optional
  • Mustard Optional
  • Mayonnaise Optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. 1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
    2. Add the sliced onions and cook until soft, golden, and slightly caramelized, about 6–8 minutes. Remove and set aside.
    3. Add the second tablespoon of butter to the skillet.
    4. Place the bologna slices into the pan. Let them cook until browned on one side, then flip.
    5. If the bologna “puffs up,” gently press it down or cut a small slit so it lays flat.
    6. Cook until both sides are nicely browned and crispy on the edges.
    7. Optionally place a slice of cheese on top of the hot bologna so it melts.
    8. Toast or warm your bread
    9. Assemble the sandwich:
    Spread mustard or mayo (optional).
    Add the fried bologna.
    Top with the cooked onions.
    10. Serve Warm

Fork Fact
Did you know bologna curls in the pan because the heat tightens one side faster than the other? That’s why cooks cut a small slit so it fries flat.
