Meow Mix

A puppy chow style snack that’s definitely not for cats.

Meow Mix appears in a school/community cookbook and is shared here as a nostalgic example of a classic “mock” recipe. While the exact date isn’t listed, it reflects the playful, practical cooking style common in mid-to-late 20th century-the kind of recipe that makes you stop, smile, and think, “Well…that actually works.”

Meow Mix

A classic cereal snack inspired by a vintage community cookbook, similar to puppy chow but with a playful name.

Course: Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 box Cheerios
  • 1 bag chocolate chips
  • 1 bag butterscotch chips
  • ¼-½ cup margarine or butter
  • 2-3 cups powdered sugar more maybe needed to coat cereal

Method

  1. Add the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and margarine/butter to a microwave-safe-bowl.
Microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring well after each round, until mixture is fully melted and smooth.
Add cereal and stir to coat.
Add powdered sugar a bag, pour in coated cereal and shake.

Note: This recipe is adapted for modern kitchens. The original instructions called for melting on the stovetop; the microwave method produces the same result with less fuss.

Meow Mix fits right in with other playful mock recipes like Mock Macaroons, or Pig Cake, where the name is half the fun and the recipe actually works.

It’s similar in spirit to traditional puppy chow, but with a playful name that reflects the humor common in community cookbooks.

Fork Fact

“Meow Mix” is a classic example of mid-century community-cookbook humor. Long before brand awareness or SEO, recipe names were often playful, tongue-in-cheek, and designed to make people laugh at potlucks — even when the recipe itself was completely practical.
