Scripture Cake (Vintage)

Vintage 1925 Bible Verse Cake

Scripture Cake is one of the most fascinating old-fashioned recipes you can still bake today. Each ingredient is written as a Bible verse, and families used these “puzzle recipes” for church socials, Sunday school, and Depression-era cookbooks.

I came across this recipe twice — once in a modern reprint, and then again in a handwritten 1925 version, which confirms that this exact Scripture Cake has been passed down for at least 100 years. It’s a sweet, dense loaf filled with raisins, figs, almonds, and warm spices. Vintage baking at its best!

“Ingredient names are listed as Bible verses, just like the original 1925 recipe. If you’d like the decoded ingredient list, email me and I’ll send it to you.

Notes

This cake has a dense vintage texture similar to a raisin-spice loaf.
You can add more spices if you want it to taste like a Christmas cake.
Wonderful served warm with butter or a drizzle of honey.

A little disclaimer: This 1925 Scripture Cake comes to you untouched and untested—just the way it was written nearly 100 years ago. I’ll test it soon and report back!
