Scripture Cake

A dense, sweet, old-fashioned cake made entirely from ingredients listed as Bible verses. This recipe comes from a handwritten 1925 church cookbook and includes raisins, figs, almonds, honey, and warm spices.

Ingredients
  

  • cups 1 Kings 4:22
  • 1 cup Judges 5:25
  • 2 cups Jeremiah 6:20
  • 2 cups 1 Samuel 30:12
  • 2 cups Nahum 3:12
  • 2 cups Numbers 17:8
  • 3 tsp 1 Samuel 14:25
  • 2 Jeremiah 17:11
  • ½ cup Judges 4:19
  • 2 tsp Amos 4:5
  • 1-2 tsp 2 Chronicles 9:9

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a tube pan.
  2. Cream together butter, sugar, and honey.
  3. Beat eggs until frothy. Add milk to eggs, then add to creamed mixture.
  4. Sift flour and baking powder together; add to mixture and stir until smooth.
  5. Chop raisins, figs, and almonds and fold into the batter.
  6. Add spices to taste.
  7. Pour into tube pan and bake for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Notes

This cake has a dense vintage texture similar to a raisin-spice loaf.
You can add more spices if you want it to taste like a Christmas cake.
Wonderful served warm with butter or a drizzle of honey.
